SELECTING A BUILDER page 1
Starting Your Search
A new home is one of the biggest and most important purchases you will make in your lifetime. By doing your homework, you will be able to shop for a home with a sense of confidence and the knowledge that will help you make the right decision.
Think about what matters most. Though builders and architects can offer important insight and creativity, it helps to clearly express your wants and needs initially and throughout the process. Begin by thinking about the type of home you want, location, and what you can afford.
Then, make a list of builders who build the type of home you're looking for in your price range. The real estate section of your newspaper is a good place to start. Looking through the ads and reading the articles can help you find out which builders are active in your area, the types of homes they are building, and the prices you can expect to pay.
Make sure the builder is properly licensed and insured. All BRAG Ann Arbor builder members are Licensed by the State of Michigan. (Whenever you hire a contractor, it's a good idea to verify their license here to avoid potential issues.)
Consider other qualifications: Experience, Education, Expertise, etc.
For instance, all BRAG Ann Arbor members must follow our strict Code of Ethics and have direct access to education and a wealth of information from the national to local level. If you have a question or concern please contact us or use our searchable online directory to search by business activity or simply search by keyword "builder".
