Annual Spring Maintenance
Doing the fix-up tasks each spring will help you to live more comfortably and they could save you money on repair bills later.
• First, inspect for water leaks. Key areas to check include overhangs,
awnings and exposed siding where snow and water might collect, causing materials to decay. Repair and replace any areas showing water damage.
• Seal air leaks. Inspect all windows and doors for drafts and sills and doorsteps for air leaks. Caulk seams and reglaze windows if needed.
• Clean all windows and screens, inside and out, and wash the screens. Vinegar mixed with water well as a low budget cleaner and old newpapers are surprisingly effective at wiping windows clean.
• Replace any worn weather-stripping around doors. This is also an annual winter chore which will nonetheless help keep the air-conditioning in the house and your electric bills down through the summer.
• Carefully inspect the roof. Use extra caution here as you check the condition of flashing around chimneys and vents.
• Retar any water-begging cracks. Clean out all gutters and
downspouts, and sweep the shingles free of sticks and leaves.
• Look at the paint on the house and the trim. Repainting may be big job, but it may make a big difference in the look of your home.
